Part Two
: The Righteous Branch Will Accomplish Justice
Monte McCullough

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

– Jeremiah 33:14-16

Advent is the anticipation of the celebration of the incarnation of The Lord Jesus Christ. We go through this build up every year at this time to worship God our Father for the promise kept, to send His Son, the Branch that springs up from the stump.

Last week we learned from Isaiah that the vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel and the men of Judah. We learned God called them a pleasant planting. But God looked for justice and instead there was bloodshed. God looked for righteousness and instead an outcry.

The song we hear accompanying this devotional, laments that “in despair I bowed my head; ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said; ‘For hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good-will to men!’” But then the next verse declares the hope that we find in Jeremiah 33. “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; the wrong shall fail, the right prevail, with peace on earth, good-will to men.”

God declares the promise of hope will be fulfilled. That day is coming when Jesus the Branch will return. In Jeremiah 23:6 the Branch will be called by “The LORD is our righteousness”. Here in Jeremiah 33 we see that God is the one who will cause the fulfillment of His promise to Israel and Judah to have the King from David’s line. This King will execute justice (wrong shall fail) and He will execute righteousness (the right prevail) in the land.

Not only that, our Lord Jesus, the promised One, will dwell with all of us in the new Jerusalem that will be called “The LORD is our righteousness” just because of His presence and rule.

This is the second advent we look forward to. Celebrate hope this season! Celebrate that God will do it! How do we know that? …

Jesus the fulfilled promise, the Branch,
Jesus being incarnated as man,
Jesus walking in complete righteousness here on earth,
Jesus knowing every temptation we have,
Jesus being obedient to accomplish the just wrath of God,
Jesus for the joy set before Him,
Jesus, the Living Water, washed away your sin by His blood,
Jesus, peace on earth, good will to men,
The Lord is our righteousness!
